He has travelled far and wide and captured the art and culture of different corners of the world with the flash of his camera. His extensive travelling has made him a citizen of the world, but for Benoy K Behl, it is always good to comeback to his nest in Bhimanagri Apartments in Safdarjung Development area after his long voyages are over! The journeys that he undertakes are those that most of the people only dream to undertake.
From the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet to Russia and Mongolia, Behl has seen it all, and more importantly, clicked all! He maintains that his journeys are not as much fun as they sound and are more about discipline and work. Work need not be done with a serious face all the time. My work is my fun time. I enjoy travelling immensely. Isnt that how work should be? he asks you. When we travel, we have to reach our destination on time, so we have to be quite disciplined on the trips and one is so engrossed in the work that it becomes fun. There have been times when we begin our journey at three in the morning and end up working till three the next morning.
Behl feels that Indian art finds a strong connect all over Asia. He says, When you study Indian art, you realise how it brings together Asia. The king of Thailand calls himself King Rama-IX. In Berlin, there is a museum dedicated to Asian art and a couple of years ago it was renamed the Museum of Indian Art, but the name was later changed to the Museum of Asian Art. During the coronation of the king of Thailand, I learnt that an Indian priest is called to endow the king with the qualities of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. So you realise how Indian art is the string that connects the entire Asian culture.
Talking some more about his work, Behl says, The journey is within. You need to love your work. These journeys have taught me a lot and have made me the person I am today.
The man, who has travelled the world, finds his sojourn to the caves of Ajanta the most memorable one. Even though he looks very serious, Behl has a humorous side to him. Every time I mention my visit to Macau, I am always asked how were the casinos? and I tell them, I dont know about the casinos, I did not go to the casinos, I was busy visiting the churches, he chuckles.
